Album

Hold Out is the sixth album by American singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, released in 1980 see 1980 in music. Although critically the album has not been as well received as other Browne recordings, it remains his only album to date to reach number 1 on the Billboard chart. The song Of Missing Persons was written for Inara George, the daughter of Lowell George formerly of the band Little Feat, a songwriting collaborator and longtime friend of Jackson Browne's who died a year prior to the release. It confirms his growth as an artist. It represents a welcome broadening of idiom. Everything that's right and everything that's wrong about Hold Out, Jackson Browne's first studio album since The Pretender 1976, can be found in its climax: the spoken confession at the end of the last cut, Hold On Hold Out. Eight minutes long, Hold On Hold Out is the LP's anthem, its farewell address and would-be summation. With Technicolor clarity, the drive of the drums, the zing of the string synthesizer and the shoulders-thrust-back momentum of the piano jump out at you-big and bright and basic. Pop until Jackson Browne 's sixth album, the singer-songwriter was pretty much adored by critics. Hailed as one of the brightest artists of the '70s Los Angeles scene that spawned an entire genre of music in the decade, Browne grew bolder with each work. So, when Browne took a three-year break between records and resurfaced on June 24, 1980, with Hold Out , expectations were high from both critics and fans, who pushed Running on Empty to No. 3 on the album chart, an all-time best showing. Everything thats right and everything thats wrong about Hold Out, Jackson Brownes first studio album since The Pretender 1976, can be found in its climax: the spoken confession at the end of the last cut, Hold On Hold Out. Eight minutes long, Hold On Hold Out is the LPs anthem, its farewell address and would-be summation. Its a measure of both the grandiosity and simplicity of Brownes intentions that this album comes down to his saying - without the aid of melody or harmony - I love you. Hold Out is a trade-off of such moments. Duff lines war with taut ones. If Jackson Browne had convincingly lowered the bar set by his first three albums on his fourth and fifth ones, his sixth, Hold Out, found him once again seeking some measure of satisfaction, albeit in reduced circumstances. His songs were less philosophical, but they were also more personal. In Of Missing Persons, he once again took on a eulogy as his subject, but unlike Song to Adam or For a Dancer, there the song was directed to his late friend's daughter and encouraged her recovery: it was more a song for the living than for the dead.
