Album

This is a compilation album of Koola Lobitos' singles and probably Fela Kuti's first LP, released in 1968, before Fela moved to Philips. Composed by Fela Kuti. This is the second version of the Koola Lobitos since May, 1965. Fela on trumpet Tunde Williams and Eddie Aroyewu trumpets. Fela Anikulapo Kuti 15 October 1938 2 August 1997 was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre and human rights activist. At the height of his popularity, he was referred to as one of Africa's most challenging and charismatic music performers. Fela was born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti on 15 October 1938 in Abeokuta, the modern-day capital of Ogun State in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, then a city in the British Colony of Nigeria. The music of Fela Kuti has never been easy for beginners to know where to start later groups Africa '70 and Egypt '80 released more than 50 albums and this set of early recordings with Koola Lobitos represents a largely unknown, or at least unheard, period of his career. Most of the material here was only ever released on 7 in Nigeria in the 1960s and has largely remained out of print, presumed lost since, so Highlife-Jazz and Afro-Soul 1963-1969 offers a revelatory insight to the beginnings of the musical ideas that led to the foundation of Afrobeat. THE story of Fela Kuti the musician is commonly documented as beginning in the late 1960s, after the young Nigerian's exposure to America's Black Power movement, and the germination of the music that came to be known as Afro-beat. Kuti had recorded in London in 1960 while he was studying at Trinity School of Music and two singles were issued, but it was his return to Nigeria in 1963 which kick-started the run of tracks collected here. The group's mid-60s self-titled debut album opens with 'Signature Tune', a short, sharp blast of percussion-led brass that leads into 'Highlife Time', which provides a statement of intent as Fela introduces the music that's got the beat.
